A nervous little island girl starts school for the very first time — and learns that new can become friend.
Today was a big, big day. Aisha put on her new uniform, and Mama packed her little backpack.
They walked down the sandy lane, past the swaying palms. Aisha’s tummy felt all fluttery.
The school gate was SO big, and there were SO many children. Aisha held Mama’s hand tight.
“I’ll be right here when you finish,” said Mama, with a kiss. Aisha’s lip wobbled, just a little.
Inside, Aisha sat all by herself. Everyone else seemed to know what to do. She felt very small.
Then a boy named Mohammed smiled. “Want to share my crayons?” he asked.
Together they drew a little boat on a big blue sea. Aisha began to giggle.
At playtime they ran and laughed in the sunny yard. Being new wasn’t so scary after all.
At story time, everyone sat close to listen. Aisha didn’t feel alone anymore.
When the bell rang, Aisha ran to Mama. “I made a friend!” she beamed.
All the way home she talked and talked, holding her little drawing tight.
That night, Aisha smiled as she fell asleep. Tomorrow, she couldn’t wait to go back. Goodnight, Aisha.
